Nominations Process for the Position of President<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Nominations are to be made by two Nominators who should be accomplished, highly respected senior soil scientists, ideally from two different countries.\u00a0 The Nominators should also supply joint or individual supporting statements in their covering letter(s).<\/p>\n

The Nominators together with the Nominee must provide the information in the attached file (President Election Full Info 2024), including an important ‘Statement of Intent’<\/strong> plus a full CV.\u00a0 All information submitted by the Nominee must also be provided to the Nominators to ensure that they can perform their task effectively.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>Honorary members – New Deadline<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Honorary Members call is still ongoing, and the deadline has now been delayed to March 31<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Nominations must be submitted to the IUSS Secretariat at iuss.secretariat@crea.gov.it<\/a> within March 31.<\/p>\n

The Honorary Members will be elected during the Council meeting within the Inter-Congress meeting. According to the IUSS Statutes the Honorary members group can be represented by three honorary members who then are allowed to vote in Council decisions.<\/p>\n

The next Council meeting will take place during the Inter-Congress meeting in Nanjing\/China, October 20\/24, 2024.<\/p>\n

The Secretariat will be informed by the people that are going to participate into the Council meeting; participation is highly encouraged as the Council is the pinnacle of the IUSS activities.<\/p>\n

SUITMA upgrades to Commission<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the late summer of 2023, the Working Group (WK) SUITMA (soils of urban, industrial, traffic, mining and military areas), established in 1998 during the 16th WCSS held in Montpellier, thanks to profs. W. Burghardt and J. L. Morel, has applied to become a Commission. This WK has a long and successful history having organized 12 conferences in 11 different countries, 7 symposia during different WCSS, and published a book in 2017, \u201cSoils within cities \u2013\u00a0Global approaches to their sustainable management\u201d; and several special issues of Journal of Soils and Sediments. The application was successfully approved by the Executive Committee and by the Council as well.<\/p>\n

3rd<\/sup> Chilean Meeting of Young Researchers in the Soil Sciences (EJICS) “Highlighting the importance of soils from Patagonia”<\/strong><\/p>\n

One of the milestones of this 3rd<\/sup> EJICS will be the development of the first National Soil Description Competition, which will allow the formation of the first Chilean soil description team to participate in international soil evaluation competitions.<\/p>\n

This 3rd<\/sup> EJICS will address 3 thematic lines: 1. Functions of soils in the ecosystem; 2. Soils and their impact on society; 3. Proposals and challenges for soil science.<\/p>\n

The Soil Forum has been held twice a year in Austria since 2002 and offers all interested parties an established format for exchanging information, communicating and discussing current soil issues. The Soil Forum creates interfaces to other topics that are important for soil protection, such as spatial planning or geology.<\/p>\n

THEME<\/strong>: Soil value – total soil value<\/p>\n

Healthy and fertile soils are the basis for food production and thus for security of supply. Changes caused by climate change, management or soil conditions have an impact on soil productivity. Argentinean Soil Science<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

The XXIX Argentinean Soil Science Congress<\/em><\/strong> will be held from 21 to 24 May 2024, in San Fernando del Valle de Catamarca. The Argentinean Association of Soil Science (AACS) organizes every two years in different locations throughout the country, the Congress of Soil Science, being in the year 2024 the twenty-ninth congress to be held in the city of San Fernando del Valle de Catamarca, from 21 to 24 May.<\/p>\n

International Science Council (ISC)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Launch of Pilot Science Missions for Sustainability<\/strong><\/p>\n

International Science Council is pleased to announce the \u201claunch of a Global Call to co-design and embark on Pilot Science Missions for Sustainability\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n

With this call, we invite novel collaborative consortia of scientists and scientific organizations, policy-makers, non-governmental organizations, communities, and the private sector, working on the cutting edge of identifying solutions for complex sustainability challenges, to co-design science missions for sustainability over an initial 18-month period.<\/p>\n

The call is open to bids for pilot missions worldwide, while pilots led by institutions located in the Global South are strongly encouraged to apply.<\/p>\n
